Beekeepers May Resume Feral Bee Collection

Update from our FSBA President:

I have received the up to date information on the Rule Change allowing Beekeepers to remove and relocate live bees.  There will be a workshop on Jan. 17th in Gainesville.  Beekeepers for the time being may continue to remove live bees.  Please read the following details from Mike Page.

"Beekeeper Protection Bill" Signing

The State Preemption/Apiculture Bill 1197 a.k.a. "Beekeeper Protection Bill"  signing with Florida Governor Scott at his office, Tallahassee, FL.   This bill gives the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) exclusive authority to regulate beekeeping, apiaries and their locations.  FSBA representatives were invited to the governor's office to take part and witness the event.   View the Actual Statue 586.10

FSBA to join EAS and ACBO

FSBA will be joining the Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS) and the Association of Caribbean Beekeepers Organizations (ACBO). EAS is an educational organization, promoting bee culture and has a five day annual conference. David Mendes is our representative to the EAS Board of Directors. ACBO gives a State of Affairs report to the Caribbean Beekeepers Congress. Bo Sterk is our representative.

Apis Viral Mapping Project

The Apalachee Beekeepers Association (ABA) has developed the Apis Viral Mapping Project, with a goal to determine viral and nosema loads in colonies within a geographical area. The project leader is Dr. Heather Gamper, ABA member and beekeeper.  FSBA will help fund this project.  Information gleaned from this project may help all Florida beekeepers.

The 2011 Florida Statutes 586.161 states, "The honeybee technical council is created in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and shall be composed of seven members to be appointed by the Commissioner of Agriculture...read more"
